Q & A: No Interest in Sports

Q: My son has no interest in sports. How can I help him get active? - Randy, Houston, Texas

A: Kids learn from what they see more than anything else. Every time I hear a parent say that their kid does not express interest in physical activity or sport, I ask mom or dad to take a look in the mirror. When sound nutrition and an active lifestyle are at the forefront of a family’s core, the kids learn to enjoy these endeavors because it’s what they see and understand as normal behavior. The critical factor for any child in learning to enjoy playing sports or being active is to be introduced to an active lifestyle at a young age and with mom and dad.

  • Take your kids to a park and create an obstacle course using what’s there.
  • Head out to the backyard and climb a tree.
  • Throw the ball around.
  • Play tag: 1-legged tag, jumping tag, capture the flag, etc.

These games are essential in helping kids develop a lifelong love for physical activity – but it all starts with you.
