Q&A: No Interest in Sports
Q: My son has no interest in sports. How can I help him get active?&– Randy, Houston, Texas
A: Kids learn from what they see more than anything else. Every time I hear a parent say that their kid does not express interest in physical activity or sport, I ask mom or dad to take a look in the mirror. When sound nutrition and an active lifestyle are at the forefront of a family’s core, the kids learn to enjoy these endeavors because it’s what they see and understand as normal behavior. The critical factor for any child in learning to enjoy playing sports or being active is to be introduced to an active lifestyle at a young age and with mom and dad.
- Build an obstacle course. Take your kids to a park and create an obstacle course using what’s there. Use these tips to get started.
- Get outside. Head outside and climb a tree, take a bike ride, or go on a hike.
- Play catch. This classic parent-child activity is a great way to connect and get active.
- Start a game of tag. Play a game of one-legged tag, jumping tag, capture the flag, etc.
These games are essential in helping kids develop a lifelong love for physical activity—but it all starts with you.
