Staying Late is Better Than Going to Work Early

Next time you’re in need of a few overtime hours at the office, plan on extending your day by staying late instead of starting early. Belgium scientists recently concluded that night owls wind up having more mental stamina than their break-of-dawn counterparts.

With the help of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology, the researchers monitored the brains of adults who participated in both wake-to-sleep timeframes. Interestingly, 10 ½ hours after rising, night owls were able to better focus on mental tasks when compared to the early birds.

The mechanism has to do with the night owl’s increased brain activity in the suprachiasmatic nucleus area and the locus coeruleus—two parts of the brain that help regulate circadian rhythm (also known as your internal clock).

So go ahead and burn the midnight oil. You’ll complete your project and be able to catch Jimmy Kimmel.
