Study: Using an iPad Before Bed Disrupts Sleep

Using a tablet device like the iPad or iPad 2 can impact your ability to fall asleep and sleep soundly, according to a small study published in Applied Ergonomics [NYTimes.com].

Researchers had 13 participants read, play games, and watch movies on an iPad, iPad 2, or PC tablet for varying amounts of time. Researchers then measured the amount of light their eyes received. They found that light exposure from a tablet for two hours at night reduced levels of melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate our internal clocks and affects our sleep cycles, by 22 percent.

If you’re having trouble sleeping, shut down electronics like iPads, TVs, and computers an hour or two before bedtime to help your body settle down and prepare for sleep.
