Q&A: Add More ESD

Axel Buhrmann / flickr

Q: The Energy Systems Development (ESD) durations seem really short to me. Is 14 minutes really enough time to gain benefits, or should I extend the time to what I'm comfortable with? The workout-time-options limit you to 90 minutes, but I often have more time and was just wondering if I should increase my ESD time when I do. – Jolette, Bar Harbor, ME

A: You can definitely add more intervals to your medium and high days, and extend out your flush (low-intensity training) on recovery days. Note that recovery between intervals is key, and you should end the workout when your heart rate is no longer able to recover (drop back down to its recovery rate). This is a sign of fatigue and can lead to overtraining.
