Q&A: Plyometric Boxes

Dave Cruz

Q: For plyometric workouts, how high should the box be? Should I buy a plyo box (and if so, what height) or just us an aerobic step at its highest level? — Rob, Fort Polk, LA

A: A 6- to 12-inch box is a good place to start, especially since getting huge air shouldn't be your top priority. Instead focus on your landing mechanics. Land softly, with your hips back and knees slightly bent. You can progress to a higher box, which will help you develop greater power through your hips. But the rule of thumb on the box height is that you should be able to land in the same position that you take off from. If you have to compensate or pull your legs to your chest, the box is too high.
