Q & A: Shoulder Popping During Weight Lifting

Q: Every time I start a training routine with pressing movements in it, my shoulders make this popping sound. How can I prevent this from happening? -- Ryan, Redwood City, CA

A: This is common. Causes can include tiny air bubbles escaping out of the pressurized joint capsule and a tendon or ligament sliding over a bony surface, and it also depends on the exercises or movements being performed. To determine the cause or severity of the "popping" sound, we recommended that you consult a health care professional, but generally speaking, body sounds without pain are nothing to worry about.
