Q&A: Wearing a Weight Vest

Q: Are weight vests worth it, and when should they be used? — Hugo, Salt Lake City, UT

A: Weight vests are a valuable tool for strength training, but it's important to maintain proper technique if you're adding weight. At Athletes' Performance, we also use weight vests for speed training. We typically will add no more than five percent of an athlete's bodyweight because anything above that will have the counterproductive effect of taxing your nervous system too much. For example, for a 200-pound athlete, 10 pounds is usually plenty.
