Q&A: Workouts Versus Programs: What's the Difference?

Dave Cruz

Q: What's the difference between workouts and training programs? — Trish, Kansas City, MO

A: Workouts stand alone, while programs consist of a series of workouts that are planned over time, progressive and personalized for your goals and schedule. It's common to bounce from one workout to the next in search of something new. At Core Performance, we’ve developed dozens of effective workouts in case that’s how you prefer to train, and to give you a feel for what the workouts, or training sessions, are like within our training programs. But if you’re serious about making long-term gains, we strongly recommend following a program.

Three Advantages of Core Performance Programs

  1. Programs are planned and progressive. Instead of randomly going from one workout to the next as workout-of-the-day style Web sites might have you do, you’ll constantly build upon your own successes and address weaknesses to stay challenged and keep making gains. You'll continually rotate through a series of training phases that span several weeks and help you avoid hitting a plateau or burning out.
  2. Programs use the Athletes' Performance methodology. From the flow of your routine to the exercises, or movements, that you perform, every training session is structured similarly to the routines the pros use at Athletes' Performance, but designed appropriately for your life and goals. Core Performance workouts also use the Athletes' Performance methodology.
  3. Programs are personalized. A program only works if it fits within your life. A personalized plan will help you get better results than a workout that's more generally designed for a bunch of people. Core Performance programs also include nutrition planning and many other useful features to help you succeed.
