English Soccer Coach Adopts Athletes' Performance's "American Way"

ESPN's Ken Lawrence writes that David Moyes, manager of England's Everton soccer club, has adopted an "American way" to keep his team and his sanity together.

Moyes, whose squad has been battling financial and injury woes, brought in performance specialists Steve Tashjian and Scott Piri from Athletes' Performance, wanting to use the same methodology that helped bring Germany to the 2006 World Cup semi-finals, to get maximum performance out of his club. It's also the same methodology we employ in our online soccer training programs.

"The players like the different methodology, and I certainly enjoy it," Moyes said. "Everything is done in movement as opposed to lying on your back on a bench pressing weights, for example. It is more about strengthening the muscles as opposed to trying to build more bulk, and the concentration is on the core of the body."

Moyes also sees the benefit in better injury prevention and recovery techniques.

"The science of preparing a player for a game, for helping him to full recovery, has become so much greater now, especially with regard to us. They talk about rehab. But we also work hard on 'prehab,' which helps the players' muscles to be properly prepared."
