Eat Slow, Lose Fast
Do you savor food, or shovel it down the pipe? If you do the latter, you’re three times more likely to be overweight, according to a new study in the British Medical Journal.
The researchers analyzed over 3,000 men and women, quizzing the subjects on their physical eating habits. Those who ate quickly and until they were full had a higher body mass index and total calorie intake than adults who ate at a slower pace. One reason is because satiety hormones don’t kick in as fast as your hand can reach your mouth.
Help yourself by avoiding situations that inherently trigger fast feeding, such as meals eaten by a television, in the car, and at fast-food restaurants. And never eat standing up, which also increases your pace. Set a table, flick on some tunes, and appreciate the food that’s in front of you.
