Is Sugar Making You Stupid?

by anaulin on flikr.com
A new study in the Diabetes Care Journal concluded that adults with higher average blood glucose (sugar) levels have worse brain function. More specifically, they performed worse on cognitive exams that tested memory, speed, and ability to manage multiple tasks at the same time.
However, the researchers noted it's not yet clear whether higher blood sugar levels increase the risk for cognitive impairment or whether cognitive impairment decreases the body's ability to control blood sugar levels.
Either way, it wouldn't hurt to cut down your sugar intake. Previous research has found that people with diabetes are 1.5 times more likely to suffer cognitive decline and dementia than people without diabetes.
