Q&A: Pre-Workout Snack for Early Risers

Q: I work out at 5:30 a.m. right after I wake up. I have breakfast after my workout. What would be a great pre-workout snack or shake? — Lauren, Yarmouthport, MA
A: There are lots of possibilities. Here are a five to get you going:
- Peanut butter and a banana
- A bar with about 10 grams of protein and 30 grams of carbs (Myoplex lite, Clif Builder Bar)
- Chocolate milk
- Toast with peanut butter
- 1/2 scoop vanilla whey protein with 8 oz of orange juice—a Mark Verstegen favorite
