Q&A: Finding the Best Fish Oil

Tetra Images / Getty Images

Q: Is there really a difference in omega-3 products? Some brands claim to have the highest grade of omega-3. Can you get the same benefit from one of the less expensive brands? — Ted, Anchorage, AK

A: Yes, there's definitely a difference. Some omega-3 products may be more pure than others. There is a purification process called high-vacuum molecular distillation, which guarantees the product to be free of heavy metals, organic contaminants, pesticides and trans-fatty acids.

Also, check the nutrition facts label for the amount of EPA and DHA per capsule. The American Heart Association recommends one to three grams of EPA and DHA a day. Don't be misled by the total fish oil concentrate listed on the bottle. You need to look below that number to the EPA and DHA totals to figure exactly how many capsules you will need to take in order to reach your daily recommended dosage.
