Q&A: Alternatives to Eating Fish

*clairity* / flickr

Q: I hate fish. I know that it is very healthy when prepared correctly. What can I eat to get the benefits of fish without having to eat it? Should I take omega-3 supplements? — Chris, Buffalo, NY

A: The best source of healthy fatty acids from fish is fish, but supplementing your diet with fish oil, an omega-3 supplement, or an essential fatty acid blend is also effective. When you're trying to decide on which supplement to purchase, keep in mind that the American Heart Association recommends one to three grams of EPA and DHA a day.

Udo’s Oil is a great choice and you can find it at many health food stores—try mixing it into shakes, smoothies, or oatmeal, or just down it and chase it with food. But whichever fatty acid supplement you choose, keep it in the fridge and only buy a 30-day supply since it can go bad over time.
