A recent study published in the journal Health Affairs found that when offered the choice between larger and smaller portions in restaurants, many would opt for the lesser portion. In a three-part experiment, researchers analyzed ordering habits in a Chinese restaurant and found that when offered smaller portions, as many as 33 percent of patrons chose to order the downsized dish. Put this into action today by ordering a lunch-sized portion when you eat out. Or cut your portion in half, and eat half and take the other half home.

“Portion sizes at restaurants are bigger now than they were 20 years ago, and in today’s economy people want to see their dollar stretch, but we’re also stretching our waistlines. If more restaurants offered half-size portion options, this would be a step in the right direction to help America curb overeating,” said Kris Bio, director of nutrition for Core Performance.
