To Cut Calories, Simplify Your Coffee

Next time you're making a Starbucks run, think twice about getting the mint mocha chip frappuccino blended coffee with chocolate whipped cream. A survey found that coffee concoctions with all the extra ingredients can carry up to 239 calories.

The survey, performed by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, analyzed about 3,000 purchases from more than 100 Manhattan coffee shops. They found that the average brewed coffee or tea has about 63 calories, even when some included sugar and milk.

But it was the creative coffees and teas that packed an unhealthy punch. Some of the blended beverages hit 239 calories, on average. Unfortunately, at one chain, almost 1 in 10 customers who were interviewed bought the largest size of the blended drinks, which can boast up to 860 calories.

The survey reports that 17 percent of U.S. adults buy one of these blended drinks each day. So opt for a simpler coffee or tea, and choose the smallest size they offer.
