Bag Back Pain
If you don't already own a golf bag with two straps, consider this: New research from the University of Montana shows that using a double-strapped bag can improve your game and reduce pain.
The Research
In the study, 15 men walked while carrying a standard set of clubs weighing 28 pounds. Those men who used a bag with just one strap burned more calories than guys who used two straps, but that's not reason to go solo.
Carrying a bag with one strap distributes the load of the clubs unevenly across your joints and muscles, say the study authors, so it can disrupt your normal stride and posture and also wear you out faster.
Fatigue increases your risk for lower back and upper body injuries. What's worse, feeling tired could cause you to make bad decisions and bad shots, resulting in a long day on the course.
Our Advice
Walking the course is an easy way to improve your general fitness while enjoying a game of golf. But don't be fooled by the promise of burning more fat by carrying a single-strap bag. Instead, use a bag with two straps to limit fatigue and strain on your body. You'll save your back and raise your game.
