Headache for Runners

Thinkstock Photos

The wrong running route can leave you with a nagging noggin. A new study by Chilean researchers found that breathing in pollution may cause headaches—even migraines.

The scientists measured for ozone and air pollutants such as nitrogen and sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and tiny, floating particles known as particulate matter associated with the combustion of gasoline, natural gas, and other fossil fuels.

The clue driving the research: Turns out, there were increased hospital admissions for migraines and other headaches on days of elevated air pollution readings. So when choosing your running path, make sure it steers clear of high-traffic roads.
