Better Sleep, Better Performance

The more sleep you get, the faster you can fly through the water, according to a new study. The study found that athletes who got extra sleep had quicker reaction time off the starting blocks, had more kick strokes and overall improved their times by .51 seconds.

Of course, you don't need to be a swimmer to benefit. The Stanford University researchers also found that extra sleep helps basketball players run the court faster and drain more free throws. So sleep can impact both your physical abilities and mental focus. The players also reported more energy and better moods.

Tips on how to incorporate sleep into your peformance training inlcude:

  • Make sleep a part of your regular training regimen
  • Sleep longer every night sleep for several weeks (seven to eight hours for adults, nine or more hours for teens and young adults)
  • Keep a regular sleep schedule, going to bed and waking up at the same times every day.

Bottom line: Take sleep seriously to perform your best in any situation.
