Q&A: How to Maintain Muscle While Injured

Scott Wachter

Q: I broke my clavicle. I need help maintaining my weight and muscle mass while I'm out of commission for eight weeks. Any advice? – Keith, Washington, DC

A: During the healing process, you could incorporate lower body strengthening exercises into your routine. The body's largest muscles are in the lower body so use this time as a chance to really develop your lower half. You can also perform some low-impact cardiovascular work to maintain your fitness.

The clavicle is a very important part of the entire shoulder complex. It's important to stabilize and strengthen your entire upper body, including the shoulder, scapular muscles and core muscles. See a licensed physical therapist to appropriately evaluate you and help you progress through a training regimen.
