Fewer Miles, Better Performance

The Challenge
Brad Kluck has been racing bikes since he was 13 and has competed in triathlons for the last decade. As a busy filmmaker and newlywed, he was looking for a program that could complement his existing endurance training and fit into his hectic schedule.
Kluck learned of the Core Performance program when his company did some work for the Core Performance Center (CPC) in Santa Monica, California. Training at CPC, he wanted to decrease the inevitable pain that comes from long periods spent in the riding position.
“You’re in a terribly unnatural position, especially on a time-trial bike,” he says.
He also wanted to be competitive in the bike-only portion of the Los Angeles Triathlon in October and begin preparations for his first-ever marathon in 2010.
The Results
Kluck found that he could train with a lot less pain. “My back and core are so strong now and I get a lot more power out of my legs.”
Because Kluck got married in the spring, he did not log as many base miles as usual in the spring and summer. Though the bike-only field at the Los Angeles Triathlon was a prestigious one, Kluck won the 40K (24.8 mile) race with a time of 1:10:54, more than two minutes faster than the next competitor, with an average speed of 21 mph.
Kluck has logged roughly 100 miles a week training this year, low by his standards, but does not feel much difference.
“For only 100 a week, I’m getting some high speeds and my climbing ability is still great,” he says. “Even though I’ve gained weight in the glutes and core, which is good, I’m still going up hills well.”
As a longtime endurance athlete, Kluck has followed an effective nutrition plan, though it’s helped to have the reinforcement from the CPC staff. “It’s so critical to have that nutrition in the first half hour after a workout,” he says. “In the past I’ve had a tendency to leave the gym and go running off into life and then crash and get sore.”
In 2010, Kluck plans to race in the Southern California Time Trial Series, a group of a dozen races in the spring and summer. He plans to complete the Los Angeles Marathon in March and is looking ahead to finishing his first Ironman Triathlon in 2011.
“I’ve done halfs, but never the full Ironman,” Kluck says. “It’s a part-time job with the training, but this program has shown me that you can always train more efficiently.”
