Getting Back to My “Drivers License Weight”
Warren Gorowitz
Age: 38
Hometown: Los Angeles, CA
Occupation: Vice President, Ewing Irrigation Products
The Challenge
Warren Gorowitz spends 80 percent of his time on the road overseeing a company with 195 stores in 22 states, along with educating the public and government officials on water conservation.
That makes him a very busy road warrior who sometimes struggles to eat right and fit in runs. He belongs to two national gym chains, but admits he’s often inclined to wing it when it comes to his distance running. He entered his first half marathon (13.1 miles) having never run more than a 10K (6.2 miles) and embarked upon his first marathon in January 2008 having never attempted a distance longer than the half marathon.
In both instances, he finished the race but wondered how he might do by following an integrated training program. He also would like to get back to his “drivers license weight” of 172, which he’s listed during renewals since college, even though his weight has increased to 189.
The Success
Gorowitz joined the Core Performance Center in Santa Monica in February after listening to a pair of talks given by Amanda Carlson-Phillips, the director of performance nutrition and research at Athletes’ Performance.
He set two specific goals: to reach his drivers license weight and to finish a marathon in four hours; his previous marathon finish was 4 hours, 42 minutes. But even before those goals, he set a broader more important one to establish the proper mindset.
“The first thing I wrote was that I’m here for myself as opposed to doing things for others in my life,” he said. “I’ve always struggled to come up with the appropriate exercise regimen to balance my life out because I’m on the road so much.”
Though Gorowitz has lost “only” five pounds as of late August, still 12 shy of the drivers license weight, he’s dropped 3 percent body fat and his fat mass has fallen 6 percent.
“Each time I go for an evaluation, it’s trending down,” he says.
In June, he completed a half marathon in Seattle in 1 hour, 55 minutes, and should have no problem finishing the P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon in Phoenix in January in under 4 hours.
Gorowitz has learned through the Core Performance system that running is not just about pounding out mileage and building endurance.
“I definitely wasn’t very focused,” he says. “The thing that Core Performance has taught me is how to pay attention to how your body moves, alignment and all of those things you don’t normally think about.”
